Lords report suggests fast fashion crackdown
22/08/2008
The UK Government has been warned that the country's fast fashion culture allows consumers to discard garments they have barely warn. According to a report by the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee, shoppers are opting for cheap garments that quickly go out of fashion and need to be replaced.
The report stated: "The attitudes of individuals and organisations must be altered so that waste is not viewed as being costly, but as socially unacceptable."
It also highlighted the rapid production of cheap clothes involves the use of low quality materials in garments of high complexity, which makes it difficult to capture any value from the materials at the end of the garments life.
The Committee recommended that the Government should continue to work with the European Commision on eco-labels to promote sustainable clothing, and it also suggested the Government officials should work with retailers to promote more sustainable products that produce less waste.
