28/04/2008
Professor Chris Carr, School of Materials at Manchester University, and also a Board member of TechniTex, has been elected as a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Dyers and has been awarded The Worshipful Company of Weavers Silver Medal.
The award has been made in recognition of his outstanding contribution to textile education and research.
One little known fact is that the Worshipful Company of Dyers have responsibility for monitoring the swans on the River Thames! This ceremony, dates from the 12th century, when the Crown claimed all unowned mute swans in Britain to ensure a ready supply for banquets and feasts. Today, the Queen retains the right to ownership on some of the stretches of the Thames. So if you ever see a group of gentlemen dressed in red uniforms, travelling up the river in traditional Thames rowing skiffs, waving flags and rounding up broods of swans, then it is possible that one of them is Chris..!
